Two Trump Turnberry courses named among world’s best by Golf Digest

Nic Oldham, General Manager at Turnberry, said: “The golf world is forever seeing incredible new courses open, so for the Ailsa to remain in such high regard after so many decades is no mean feat, particularly after the significant changes made by Martin Ebert.”

Trump Turnberry’s standing as one of the world’s best golf resorts has been reinforced as both of the venue’s 18-hole layouts have made Golf Digest’s list of the World’s Top 100 Golf Courses.

The ranking, which details the best courses outside of the United States, features both the legendary Ailsa course and – for the first time – the younger King Robert the Bruce, making Turnberry the only golf resort in the UK and Ireland to boast multiple entries on the list.

The King Robert the Bruce is celebrating its seventh anniversary this summer and has entered Golf Digest’s list for the first time at no. 94. Renowned architect Martin Ebert was commissioned to completely transform the former Kintyre course, and his masterpiece opened for play in 2017.

A classic links layout that makes the most of Trump Turnberry’s stunning setting among 800 acres of coastal Scottish countryside, the King Robert the Bruce is best known for the stretch of holes around the turn, much of which plays alongside the Firth of Clyde. The course is named for the legendary king born in Turnberry Castle in 1274, on the site where the emblematic Turnberry Lighthouse – which now houses a halfway house – now stands.

With more than 120 years of history, the Ailsa – ranked eighth in the world by Golf Digest – is a permanent fixture at the top of global golf course rankings. In 2016, Ebert unveiled his reimagined Ailsa and elevated the course to even higher acclaim, including the signature par-three ninth hole. The layout has staged four Open Championships, including the famous ‘Duel in the Sun’ in 1977, won by Tom Watson.

Nic Oldham, General Manager at Turnberry, said: “The golf world is forever seeing incredible new courses open, so for the Ailsa to remain in such high regard after so many decades is no mean feat, particularly after the significant changes made by Martin Ebert.”

“However, we have always believed that the King Robert the Bruce is another world-class course and it’s very pleasing to see the layout’s quality recognised by Golf Digest. It’s an honour to continue to see our courses counted alongside so many icons of the sport.”

Turnberry’s 18-hole courses are complemented by the nine-hole Arran course, the Wee Links pitch-and-putt and the state-of-the-art Golf Academy.

Since opening in 1906, Turnberry has consistently been recognised as a ‘must-visit’ destination for both golfers and non-golfers. The Edwardian hotel and surrounding estate are home to three restaurants, including the fine dining experience 1906, and the serene Spa at Turnberry.

Through outdoor activities centre Turnberry Adventures, guests can try their hand at other pursuits, including horse riding, beach walks, archery, falconry, clays, simulated shoots and rifle shooting.
