The highly-rated golf course at sustainable lifestyle resort Ombria Algarve has been officially crowned ‘Europe’s Best New Golf Course 2024’ at the 11th edition of the World Golf Awards; an annual event that celebrates and rewards world-class courses, golf destinations and excellence in golf tourism. The ceremony was held in Portugal’s city of Funchal on 22nd November, during which Portugal itself was named ‘World’s Best Golf Destination’.

Ombria Algarve’s 18-hole, Par 71 golf course was designed by acclaimed designer Jorge Santana da Silva who conceived the course according to the highest practices of environmental sustainability. This has previously been acknowledged with a certification from the GEO Foundation for Sustainable Golf; a non-profit organisation that is dedicated to sustainable golf as a recognition of environmental and social excellence.
The importance of sustainability is reflected throughout Ombria Algarve. The resort also features a wide range of premium residences and the Viceroy at Ombria Algarve; a 5-star hotel which opened on 1st October 2024 and marked the debut of the American brand Viceroy Hotels & Resorts in Southern Europe. Throughout the creation of the course, the team emphasised Ombria’s strong commitment to environmental stewardship by incorporating carefully chosen design solutions. As such, the layout of Ombria Algarve’s golf course minimises turf areas to preserve and integrate native riverine landscapes whilst conserving the surrounding forests to support local wildlife.
To further boost proficiency and minimise water consumption, a specially designed pumping and irrigation system has been installed. Rainwater collected by the ditches alongside the resort’s roads, streets and car parking areas is channelled towards a storage lake on the 18th hole of the golf course and used for irrigation and landscaping by sophisticated, energy-efficient pumps that will save 15% water and electricity.
