Course enhancements reduce bunker footprint by 70 per cent and reshape playing strategy

Golf at The Hawthorn has completed a major bunker redevelopment project ahead of the highly anticipated opening of The Hawthorn by Galway Bay, marking another significant milestone for one of the most ambitious hospitality and golf developments on Ireland’s west coast.

Delivered by specialist contractor European Golf Services, the project has transformed the visual character and strategic challenge of the Christy O’Connor Jnr-designed course, reducing the number of bunkers by 59 and cutting the total bunker surface area across the layout by approximately 70 per cent.

The redesign forms part of a wider effort to elevate the overall playing experience at the par-72 championship layout ahead of the opening of The Hawthorn by Galway Bay, the new five-star destination overlooking Galway Bay.

A key objective of the project was to move away from the course’s previous concentration of traditional parkland-style bunkers, replacing them with a more refined and strategic bunker style that better reflects the natural landscape and modern course design principles.

Post-project, the course now features 55 bunkers. Many of the larger hazards have been removed or reduced in scale, while several greenside bunkers have been replaced with carefully contoured run-off areas designed to introduce a broader range of recovery shots around the putting surfaces.

Elsewhere, smaller pot bunkers have been introduced in select locations to add precision-based challenges for players while improving the overall visual definition of key holes.

All the remaining bunkers have had drainage renewed, and a resin-bound liner installed to ensure consistency, longevity and the highest level of playability. While undertaking the project, drainage has also been improved in all areas of the golf course, particularly around greens and surrounds.

Dean Montgomery, the venue’s director of golf, said: “We wanted to take a considered approach to the bunker strategy, look at how the course could be improved both visually and from a playing perspective while respecting Christy O’Connor Jnr’s design.

“By reducing the number of traditional parkland bunkers and introducing smaller pot bunkers alongside more natural run-off areas, we have created something that is more in keeping with the landscape while also adding greater variety to the challenge for golfers.

“The other key part of this project has been around reducing the maintenance strain that our previous bunkering had on our greenkeeping team. This project will enable them to focus more of their time on other areas of the golf course, particularly the greens, fairways and tee boxes.

“The work undertaken has been about elevating the overall experience for players. With the opening of The Hawthorn by Galway Bay approaching, it was important for us to ensure the golf course reflects the same level of quality and ambition as the wider destination.”

Together, the hotel and enhanced golf course are expected to position The Hawthorn as a compelling new destination and high-end base along Ireland’s celebrated Atlantic golf corridor.
