Sean McLeod, VP of Digital Experience at Club Caddie, on operator instinct, the AI inflection point, and what golf technology must become.

Sean McLeod didn’t arrive at golf technology from a computer science department. He arrived from the game itself – raised on a course, educated in Professional Golf Management at Niagara College, and shaped by years in golf retail and operations at the Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge and Golf Town before making the move into tech at Lightspeed Commerce, where he spent five years as a Sales Engineer and Trainer for their golf division.

That combination of firsthand operational experience and technical depth is what brought him to Club Caddie and what drives the digital vision he’s been building there ever since.

“I’ve sat on the operational side and understand exactly how the right digital tools can transform a facility’s success,” McLeod says. “I wasn’t just selling software. I was solving problems I had lived with.”

Building From Scratch

When McLeod joined Club Caddie three years ago, the day after an unexpected layoff at a competitor the company had a handful of websites and apps, no email or SMS presence, and no managed marketing offering at all. Today, 75% of Club Caddie clients rely on multiple digital tools within the platform, and the Club Caddie Managed Marketing (CCMM) division runs the full digital strategy for dozens of courses across North America.

“I was given the autonomy to build our website, mobile, and marketing departments from scratch,” he says. “Being able to turn that vision into real outcomes for operators has been the most rewarding stretch of my career.”

The Shift in Golf Marketing

The digital marketing landscape for golf courses has changed fundamentally, and McLeod has had a front-row seat. What once passed for a marketing strategy, a static website and a monthly email blast no longer moves the needle with a more diverse, digitally native player base.

“Today’s golfers expect a seamless, social-first experience across every touchpoint. We’ve moved away from broad blasts toward targeted, automated workflows that treat every golfer like a VIP while proactively filling the tee sheet.”

The biggest barrier, he notes, isn’t willingness it’s bandwidth. Operators running lean teams through demanding seasons don’t have hours to spend on content calendars and campaign strategy. The answer, in McLeod’s view, is technology that handles the heavy lifting automatically, using real-time data to identify revenue gaps and trigger the right outreach at the right moment.

AI as the Operating Partner

The theme McLeod returns to most consistently is the shift from reactive to proactive from software that records what happened to systems that help operators decide what to do next. That shift, he believes, is where AI changes everything.

Club Caddie’s Looper AI is the most visible expression of that vision: an assistant built directly into the platform, connected to live course data, that answers plain-English questions about revenue trends, player behavior, and marketing opportunities without requiring a single export or report.

“AI allows us to automate the repeatable tasks so that technology feels invisible — making the transition from the digital world to the first tee smoother than ever for the player.”

For McLeod, the implications go beyond convenience. When technology absorbs the routine, staff get back to what they do best: hospitality. “Embracing these digital tools doesn’t replace the personal touch of a club,” he says. “It actually frees your team up to provide it.”

The Vision

Asked to describe Club Caddie’s trajectory in a single sentence, McLeod is direct: “Club Caddie is transitioning from a software provider to golf’s premier AI operating partner delivering an intelligent platform that sells proven outcomes rather than just tools.”

It’s a statement grounded in where he came from as much as where the company is going. The tools being built now – Looper AI, automated managed marketing, accelerated development powered by agentic AI aren’t abstract product features. They’re the answers to frustrations McLeod knows firsthand.

The people building the platform remember what it felt like to need it. And in golf technology, that turns out to make all the difference.
