New Coach Certification programme will combine major-winning performance principles with ZEN Golf’s Active Terrain Technology to help coaches create practice that feels—and performs—more like the real game.
Much of the reaction to Ryan Fox’s Open Championship victory has focused on the ways in which the New Zealander differs from the conventional image of a modern high-performance athlete. ZEN Golf and leading performance coach Karl Morris believe the more important story is not what Fox looks like, but how he sees, decides and performs.
Fox’s victory at Royal Birkdale provided a compelling demonstration of the principles Morris has developed during seven years of working with the new Champion Golfer of the Year: see the shot, respond to the task and commit to the decision—even when the player’s technique, emotions and physical sensations are less than perfect.
These principles will now help shape an expanded partnership between Morris and ZEN Golf, including a new Coach Certification programme designed to help golf coaches and academies create more realistic, adaptable and engaging learning environments.
The programme will combine Morris’s three decades of experience working with major champions, Ryder Cup players and golfers at every level with ZEN Golf’s patented Active Terrain Technology. Together, the partners intend to help coaches move practice beyond the repetition of technique and towards the development of golfers who can perceive, decide, adapt and perform.
“The search for a perfect state is a myth,” said Morris. “You can perform while experiencing fear, doubt or physical tension. Good performance does not require those sensations to disappear.”
Fox’s winning putt offered a powerful example. With the Open Championship on the line, he experienced all the physical effects of extreme pressure. He did not need to eliminate those sensations before performing. He returned his attention to the shot in front of him and completed the task.
“The first question is always: ‘What does a good shot look like?’” Morris explained. “Once you have gathered the information, your job is to see that shot as clearly as you possibly can before you play it.”
Another principle Morris has developed with Fox is “No Stories”: avoiding unhelpful narratives about previous shots, potential outcomes or what a particular moment might mean.
“Don’t create a narrative about what has just happened,” Morris said. “Return to the present and ask yourself one question: ‘What is the task right now?’”
For ZEN Golf, these principles reflect the true nature of the game. Golf is not played through the repetition of identical movements from flat, predictable surfaces. Every shot presents a different combination of lie, slope, target, consequence and emotion. Performance depends upon the golfer’s ability to interpret that changing information and find an appropriate solution.
ZEN’s programmable Green Stage and Swing Stage recreate the changing slopes, contours and lies of the golf course indoors. Rather than asking players to repeat the same movement from the same position, ZEN’s Active Terrain Technology presents changing problems that require golfers to read the environment, imagine the shot, make a decision and adapt their movement.

The collaboration will position the ZEN Stage as an environment for learning through play—a stage on which the slopes, decisions and consequences of the golf course can emerge beneath the golfer’s feet.
Through guided challenges and games, golfers will be invited to step onto the Green Stage and into the shoes of the game’s great champions. Rather than simply watching famous moments, they will experience the changing terrain, decisions, emotions and consequences that made those moments significant.
The approach is informed by ecological dynamics and representative learning design: the understanding that skills are more likely to transfer to competition when practice contains the information, variability and decision-making demands found in the real performance environment.
While Fox’s victory provides a timely elite example, the partnership’s ambition extends across the game. The same principles can help beginners discover golf more naturally, enable established players to transfer their skills more effectively to the course and support coaches in creating sessions that are more relevant, engaging and memorable.
The expanded partnership will include educational content, guided player experiences and the development of the ZEN Master Coach Certification programme. The programme will show coaches how to combine performance psychology, representative practice design and Active Terrain Technology to create learning experiences that develop the golfer—not merely the golf swing.
ZEN’s wider learning philosophy is already influencing its work with leading golf venues and organisations. Its recent collaborations with The Belfry, Celtic Manor Resort and Wales Golf are extending the application of ZEN technology across coach education, player development, participation and wellbeing.
