European golf legend Colin Montgomerie to headline new event in Sicily
Verdura Resort will host the inaugural Sir Rocco Forte Captain’s Trophy from September 10-13, introducing an exclusive new event that brings together world-class golf, culture and conversation at one of Europe’s leading golf destinations.
The event will be headlined by Colin Montgomerie, one of the most accomplished players in golfing history. The eight-time European Tour Order of Merit winner and Ryder Cup legend will deliver a special driving range exhibition, offering guests a closer look at the techniques and approach that shaped one of the game’s most illustrious careers.
Set across the Sicilian resort’s two championship courses, the four-day event will include a 36-hole Stableford tournament, complemented by a programme of talks, dinners and guest sessions covering a range of topics spanning golf, economics and finance.
The tournament will be directed by Donato Di Ponziano, golf development supervisor for Rocco Forte Hotels, with a format that balances competition with a welcoming and entertaining environment.
Open to amateur golfers registered with their respective federations, the competition will be played over two rounds, with one on the East Links course and one on West Shore course. Players will compete across three handicap categories, with prizes awarded for both net and gross performances.
Sir Rocco Forte said: “Golf has always been about camaraderie, competition and the joy of great surroundings. At Verdura Resort, the Captain’s Trophy celebrates all three.”
Set against the backdrop of Sicily’s southern coastline, Verdura Resort continues to strengthen its position as one of Europe’s most complete golf destinations. Recognised among the world’s premier golf resorts, the venue combines championship golf with a wider offering that spans hospitality, wellbeing and sport.
Di Ponziano said: “The Sir Rocco Forte Captain’s Trophy represents a new chapter for golf at Verdura. It brings together competition, culture and conversation in a way that reflects both the spirit of the game and the wider experience we offer at Verdura Resort.
“Welcoming a player of Colin Montgomerie’s stature adds real depth to the event, and we look forward to hosting guests for what will be a distinctive and memorable few days in Sicily.”
Food for the event will be overseen by Fulvio Pierangelini, Creative Director of Food for Rocco Forte Hotels, with menus centred on seasonal ingredients and his renowned interpretation of Italian cuisine.
When not on the course, guests will have access to Verdura’s wider facilities, including its practice areas, private coastline and the 4,000m² Irene Forte Spa.
