Le Château Golf Course at Heritage Golf Club, Mauritius, has been awarded GEO Certification by the GEO Foundation for Sustainable Golf – the world’s most respected and credible recognition for environmental and social responsibility in golf.
This achievement highlights Heritage Golf Club’s unwavering commitment to preserving and enhancing Mauritius’ unique biodiversity, transforming the game of golf into an immersive experience rooted in nature.
Located within the Bel Ombre territory in the southwest of the island, which is part of UNESCO’s Man and the Biosphere Programme, Le Château Golf Course actively contributes to the conservation of this unique environment, playing a vital role in safeguarding and enriching the natural environment.
Carole Kerrey, Director of Certification and Credibility at GEO Certification, said: “It is excellent to see Le Château Golf Course achieve certification. This recognition highlights the sustainability efforts already in place, as well as Heritage Golf Club’s ambition to continuously improve its impact across Nature, Resources and Community. We look forward to what further can be achieved in the coming years.”
Landscapes across the course are carefully managed to balance playability with ecological stewardship, protecting native and endemic species such as the local Viola, while the indigenous Vetiver has been integrated into the course landscaping to enhance biodiversity.
The thriving habitat also attracts rare wildlife, including a Buzzard raptor species endemic to the Reunion Island, which has been observed flying over the course and perching within the trees.
This latest milestone builds on Heritage Golf Club’s sustainability leadership. In 2024, La Réserve Golf Links, the club’s second layout and the Indian Ocean’s Best Golf Course, became the first course in the African region to be awarded GEO Certified Development status.
Commenting on the achievement, Darrin Hedley, Golf Director at Le Château Golf Course, said: “Achieving GEO Certification is a proud milestone for us and reflects our deep commitment to both exceptional golf and environmental stewardship.
“Our resort guests can enjoy a world-class experience while connecting with Mauritius’ unique biodiversity, knowing that every round supports the preservation of this extraordinary landscape.”
