From first swings to a defining partnership: Portuguese golfer signs landmark deal with the destination where it all began.
Vilamoura continues to establish its prominence on the international sporting scene following the announcement of the region’s elite sponsorship deal with one of Portugal’s most accomplished golfers, Ricardo Melo Gouveia.
The 34-year-old, who’s love of golf started his career in Vilamoura at the age of 10, has represented the country on some of the world’s biggest stages, including the 2016 Rio Olympics and on a consistent basis across the European Tour.
On his return, Gouveia said: “Clube de Golfe de Vilamoura is where I first started playing golf and where my passion for the game truly developed. But it’s more than just a golf club, it feels like family to me.
“I remember coming here as a junior, practising with my friends and meeting my first coach. It gave me the foundation to pursue college in the United States and eventually turn professional.”
After graduating from the renowned University of Central Florida, Gouveia rose to the world’s top 150 golfers in the space of seven years, his story proving an inspiration to the next generation of aspiring Portuguese golfers.
Established in 1969 following the opening of the prestigious Old Course, Vilamoura Golf Club has been a feature of golf in the Algarve for nearly 50 years, hosting regular competitions both internally and in partnership with the Portuguese Golf Federation.
“I’m very proud to see how Vilamoura has evolved,” Gouveia said. “It’s a destination with enormous potential and a unique charm, shaped by more than 300 days of sunshine and the authenticity of the region. Seeing the infrastructure being renewed, the brands gaining new life, and international events returning here fills me with great joy.”
The evolution of the brand is yet another example of the profound change taking place in the heart of the Algarve, with Vilamoura quickly becoming one of the country’s international sporting hubs.
Over the past 12 months, the town has attracted some of sport’s leading competitions, such as the Portugal Invitational, to be hosted at the Algarve’s new and only private Els Club Vilamoura, on the PGA Tour Champions (27 July – 2 August), top level show-jumping events including CSI 5*, and international sailing regattas.
Nuno Sepúlveda, Co-Ceo at DETAILS, said: “Seeing a great athlete like Ricardo Melo Gouveia reconnect with the place where his journey began shows that we are on the right path in Vilamoura’s transformation.
“Ricardo is one of Portugal’s top golfers and a true competitor in every sense of the word, with the talent, dedication and mindset to perform on the biggest stages; exactly the kind of athlete we want to stand beside. Our work began with investing in world-class infrastructure, and now we are taking the next step by supporting sport across all levels.
“Golf, in particular, is vital; it drives the local economy, unites communities, and nurtures the next generation of talent. This sponsorship embodies exactly that vision.”
The announcement comes on the heels of Ricardo Melo Gouveia’s outstanding performance at the Kenya Open on the DP World Tour. He finished in ninth place after rounds of 64 (six under par), 65 (five under), 67 (three under) and 68 (two under) on the final day, which included four birdies and two bogeys.
Starting the final round in sixth place, the Portuguese golfer closed the tournament with a total of 264 strokes, 16 under par.
